Pakistan produced 6.1 million mobile phones In the first two months of 2024, local manufacturing and assembly plants produced and assembled 6.1 million mobile devices, whereas commercial imports accounted for only 0.3 million of that total.
According to official data, domestic manufacturing and assembly facilities produced 3.83 million mobile phones in February, as opposed to 0.06 million that were commercially imported.
Additionally, 3.35 million smartphones and 2.78 million 2G mobile phones were among the 6.1 million mobile phones that were produced or built locally. In addition, 40% of mobile devices on the Pakistan network are 2G, while 60% of mobile devices are smartphones, according to PTA data.
In the year 2023, there was a four percent decrease in the local production and assembly of mobile phones. This decline was attributed to import problems caused by restrictions on issuing letters of credit (LCs) for accessories related to mobile phones. Nonetheless, official data showed that during this time, commercial imports of mobile phones rose despite limitations.
In contrast to the 21.94 million that were produced during the same period in 2022 and the 24.66 million that were produced throughout 2021, local manufacturing facilities produced and assembled 21.28 million mobile devices in 2019.
But in 2023, there were 1.58 million commercial imports, as opposed to 1.53 million in 2022. Eighty-eight million smartphones and thirteen million 2G phones were among the twenty-one million mobile phones that were produced and assembled locally.
In the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2023–24, from July to February, the nation imported mobile phones valued at $1.148 million, representing a growth of 156.43 percent over the $447.854 million during the same time of the previous fiscal year.
In February 2024, Pakistan’s imports of mobile phones fell by 17.46 percent month-over-month (MoM) to $160.899 million from $194.928 million in January 2024, as reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
In February 2024, there was a 386.78 percent YoY increase in mobile phone imports from $33.054 million in February 2023 to February 2024.
